Block and masonry in Crestview, laid by the owner
Concrete block is how Northwest Florida builds. It shrugs off humidity, termites, and the kind of wind that tears siding off a frame house. But block is only as good as the mason laying it. Out-of-plumb courses, unfilled cells, skipped reinforcement, and sloppy mortar joints all get hidden under stucco and paint, right up until they don't. L&N Professional Services does block and masonry work across Crestview, Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, and the rest of Okaloosa County for homeowners, builders, and commercial property owners, and Lakinzee is the one on the line.
Masonry work we do
- Stem walls and foundation block for slabs, additions, sheds, and new homes
- Exterior block walls for additions, garages, workshops, and new construction
- Retaining walls for grade changes, driveways, and drainage control
- Privacy and property walls, with or without decorative caps and columns
- Columns, piers, and mailbox posts in block, brick, or stone veneer
- Masonry repair: cracked block, failing mortar, bowed walls, hurricane damage
- Brick and stone veneer on walls, columns, and entries
How we build a block wall
- Layout and footingWe locate the wall, check it against the plan or the lot line, and pour or verify the footing. A wall is only as straight and level as the footing under it.
- First courseThe first course gets the most attention. It is set in a full mortar bed, leveled in both directions, and checked for square. Get this right and the rest of the wall follows.
- Laying and reinforcingCourses go up to a line, plumb and level every few blocks. Vertical rebar is placed in the cells the plan calls for, horizontal reinforcement where required, and the cells are grout-filled. This is the part a bad mason skips because nobody can see it.
- Bond beam and tie-inWhere the wall carries a roof or a slab, the bond beam is formed, reinforced, and poured so the structure above has something to hold on to.
- FinishJoints are struck clean, the wall is washed, and it is ready for stucco, paint, veneer, or to stand on its own. We walk it with you before we leave.
When to call a mason
- You are planning an addition, garage, or workshop and want block instead of frame
- A slope or driveway is washing out and needs a real retaining wall, not landscape timbers
- There are stair-step cracks in your block or a wall that is starting to lean
- Mortar is crumbling and you can push a screwdriver into the joint
- You want a privacy wall, courtyard, or entry columns that will outlast a wood fence by thirty years
- A commercial site needs a dumpster enclosure, screen wall, or equipment wall
What block and masonry work costs
Masonry is priced on the wall, not by the hour. What moves the number:
- Length and height of the wall (height drives reinforcement and footing size fast)
- Footing work and whether it already exists
- Reinforcement and grout requirements, especially for retaining and load-bearing walls
- Engineering and permits on taller or structural walls
- Finish: bare block, stucco, paint, caps, or brick and stone veneer
- Access for block delivery and whether material has to be hand-carried
Small wall or full structure, residential or commercial, we give you an honest look and a clear written number before any block gets laid.
Why L&N for block work
A lot of the block work in this county gets done by whoever a builder could find that week. L&N has been a licensed and insured Florida LLC since 2021, and the person who quotes your wall is the one running the crew that lays it. We also pour the footings and slabs that go with block work and handle the framing support and finish that comes after it, so you are not lining up three crews and hoping they show up in the right order.
Masonry questions we get asked
Why is so much Florida construction concrete block?
Block stands up to wind, moisture, termites, and heat better than wood framing, and it is what the Florida Building Code and most insurers favor for exterior walls in the Panhandle. A reinforced, grout-filled block wall is about as durable as residential construction gets.
Do I need an engineer for a retaining wall?
Short garden walls usually do not. Taller walls, walls holding back a driveway or a structure, and anything the county asks about often do. We tell you up front which one you have and handle the drawings and permit when they are needed.
Can you match my existing block or brick for a repair?
Usually close enough that it disappears once it is painted or stuccoed. For exposed brick we match size, color, and mortar joint style as closely as supply allows and show you a sample first.
How long does a block wall take?
A typical residential stem wall or garden wall is a few days of laying plus cure time before it is loaded or backfilled. Larger walls and structures take longer, and we give you the schedule in writing with the quote.
Is a block wall cheaper than a poured concrete wall?
For most residential walls, yes. Block needs less formwork and no pump truck, and it can be built in stages. Poured walls make sense for certain foundations and heavy retaining situations, and we will tell you if yours is one of them.
Built straight. Built to stay that way.
